FAQs

Where are you located? What are the hours?

We are located in San Francisco at 1980 Mission St, between 15th St. and 16th St. across from Bart & Walgreens.  Our phone number is (415) 861-7840.

Hours are 8am-4:30pm, Monday thru Friday.  Closed for lunch, 12-1pm.

Why do I need to join a Union?

You are working in a union store; you must become and remain a member of the Union as a condition of employment. Unions are important because they help set the standards for education, skill levels, wages, working conditions, and quality of life for workers. Union-negotiated wages and benefits are generally superior to what non-union workers receive.

Union contracts generally provide far more protection than state and federal laws. Many employers in California have an “employment at will” policy and non-union workers can be fired for reasons that might be arbitrary or for no reason at all.

How do I pay my dues?

You may elect to be billed monthly for your dues or set up an automatic withdrawal from your debit or credit card.  For your convenience we’ve also launched an online dues payment option for you here on our website.

What is the Defense Fund?

The UFCW Local 648 Defense Fund is your guarantee that, in the event of a strike or lockout, your Union will have the resources to fight even the biggest employer on your behalf.

What happens if I quit my job?

If you are no longer employed under a contract with this Union, you may want to take out a withdrawal card.  Having a withdrawal card permits you advantages such as reduced or waived initiation fees, if you return to work in the industry with this or other locals affiliated with the UFCW International Union.

Do I have medical coverage?

Eligibility requirements vary based on the benefit program.  For more information regarding your particular situation, please visit our office or contact Cynthia Salazar, Health and Welfare Insurance Liaison at: 415-861-7840.

I want to retire, what do I need to do?

You should begin this process at least 3 months before you want to retire, to ensure a smooth transition.  First, download and fill out a “Pension Inquiry Form” to find out how many vesting years you have and what amount you will receive. Then you will need to get the Pension Application. Please visit our office or contact Cynthia Salazar at: 415-861-7840.

If you leave the industry

did you know thatIf you are no longer employed under a contract with this Union, you may want to take out a withdrawal card. Returning a
