UFCW Local 648 has over 4000 members covering San Francisco and parts of Daly City and Pacifica. Established in 1907, UFCW Local 648 is a progressive organization, constantly striving to represent the members’ interests to the fullest extent at the workplace and in the community. UFCW Local 648 has bargained contracts over the years that have ensured its members have health insurance, pensions, good wages and job security. The officers and staff of the local are very involved in political and community activities, making the union’s impact felt and our voices heard.

UFCW Local 648 is one of hundreds of local unions, spread from coast to coast, which belong to the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. Representing 1.3 million members from both the private and public sectors, the UFCW is one of the largest unions in the United States.San Francisco is a one of a kind city that has its own unique history, geography and demographics, (according to the 2010 Census, over 45% of the population speaks another language in their home). San Francisco is a destination for tourists from all over the country and world. It is a desirable place to visit, live and do business in but it is challenging climate for our members to work and survive in San Francisco with its high cost of living.

UFCW Local 648 was established in the early 20th century, in this unique place, in response to the needs of the workers of that time. In its beginnings, Local 648 was almost completely untypical of the union movement. Over the years, there was a shift from a narrow focus, ‘intent almost exclusively on regulating its inordinately long hours of work…’ to a broad based union with concerns that reached into every phase of the job and beyond that, into areas of community, political, economic and social policy and practice that affects every worker and union member in San Francisco.

As we move forward into the next century of our union history, Local 648 plans to continue organizing and building our very unique union in very unique ways. We stand with and for our members now as we have in the past. We want and encourage involvement from our members, current and retired, as we attack the future. This is San Francisco. This City was built by labor. This is our City. This is our Union. This is UFCW Local 648. We represent you!
